Hilary Swank On Her Ill-Fated Trip To Chechnya: I Should Know Where Im Going

Hilary Swank tonight kicked off her image-rehabilitating campaign after the disastrous paid appearance at tyrannical Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov’s Oct. 5 birthday party with a visit to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Noxon cut her teeth and gained geek cred with her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and most recently wrote the remake of Fright Night. Ouija was set up at Universal but was untethered in late August due to budgetary concerns. The move followed Universal's letting go of another Hasbro property, Monopoly. In September, Hasbro and Ridley Scott, who is producing Monopoly, set Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to pen a script. Ouija is still envisioned as a family adventure in the tone of The Mummy centering on a family who has to deal with otherwordly chaos that is unleashed. Social TV: Survivor Winner Parvati Shallow: Social Media Got Me Around the World For Free

Parvati Shallow In CBS' web series Around the World for Free, Parvati Shallow circumnavigated the globe for 100 days without a single dollar to her name, and she has social media to thank for her (mostly) good fortune. Around the World Productions brought the idea to CBS after the first season had aired in 2007, and the network felt that it was a perfect fit. "We thought this was such a uniquely interactive opportunity because it authentically involves an audience," says Michelle Lynch, director of original programming at CBS. "It was different for us because we were new to the original content space, so it was the perfect property for us to jump on and run with." Once CBS Interactive obtained the rights to the show, season two premiered in July 2010 with host Jeff Schroeder, an alum of CBS' Big Brother (who had an already built-in fan-base). The series was a success, and a year later, on July 8, Shallow was on a similar journey. The former Survivor winner relied on the show's online community of fans to shelter, feed, transport and guide her. Through polls, Twitter, live chats and an interactive map that followed her journey in real time, fans determined her route and activities. They even voted on which tattoo Shallow got during the show's second episode. After trekking 30,000 miles, over three continents and 12 countries, Shallow is back in her hometown of Santa Monica, Calif. We caught up with the now-professional nomad and asked her how her attitude toward social media shifted, why it was different from her time on Survivor and whether she'd ever consider doing it all again. TVGuide.com: The entire show was dictated by your interaction with fans. What was that like? Parvati Shallow: It was wild. You couldn't script it. And that's what was great about it at the same time. It's really a reality show. In most reality shows, you're put in a scripted situation. This show? It was all me. It was what I wanted to do, who I wanted to connect with. That's what was wonderful about it. The host can really make it their own. Social TV: How Survivor's Jeff Probst bridged the gap between CBS and its audience Were you at all hesitant going into it? Shallow: I didn't 100 percent understand the concept of the show. I thought, "I don't even know if I can do this. I don't know where I'm going to go, who I'm going to talk to." And I didn't like talking to people on Twitter. Relying on people you don't know online? That's weird! Not really my style. Social networking wasn't my forte, and the show is built upon social networking. So you obviously had a change of heart at some point. Shallow: I said, OK, I need to fully change my attitude about this. One of the biggest challenges I needed to overcome was to just allow these people into my life. And it turns out, the fans I connected to online and through the show are some of the most wonderful people I've ever met. I'm really glad I opened my mind. Do you think it's important for shows to be engaged with viewers? Shallow: I realized social networking is a really great tool, especially for fans who are in areas removed from Hollywood. They're more interested and excited, and if they want to talk to TV personalities, they can reach out and actually get a response. It's a cool way to connect. If you could play a part in guiding someone's journey and you could see the actual results of what you did the next day or the day after, it definitely encourages people to get more involved. Check out 9 social show integrations we're liking right now What was the most moving experience you had throughout the 100 days? Shallow: It was probably making it up to the refugee camps in Dedaab [Kenya]. I had wanted to do that for months, ever since I had heard about the famine situation in Somalia and what was happening in the refugee camps in Kenya. I made that a personal mission, and I hit so many roadblocks, but I still pushed through and made it there. To me, that was a personal victory. Which was more physically and emotionally challenging: Around the World or Survivor? Shallow: Around the World was longer - so that's more like a marathon. Survivor is more like a sprint. With this, I had so much passion and it gave me so much energy. I didn't really feel exhausted or wiped out, even when I broke my wrist and was in the hospital. I still wanted to keep going. And in Survivor, you're dying. You're starving, you're dehydrated, everyone is driving you insane. It's totally different. Any plans of traveling the world in the near future? Shallow: I would love to! This is my calling. I just love it so much. Check out Day 67 of Parvati's journey, after she broke her wrist riding a quad bike in the Namib Desert.

Oka!

A Dada Films (in U.S.) release presented with Required Viewing of a Roland Films-James Bruce production. Produced by James Bruce, Lavinia Currier. Executive producer, Andrew Fierberg. Co-producer, Norbert Bogbeyate. Co-executive producer, Isaach de Bankole. Directed by Lavinia Currier. Screenplay, Currier, Suzanne Stroh, Louis Sarno, based on Sarno's memoir, "Last Thoughts Before Vanishing From the Face of the Earth."With: Kris Marshall, Isaach de Bankole, Mapumba, Will Yun Lee, Mbombi, Essanje, Peter Riegert. (Sango, Akka, French, English dialogue)If movies were subject to sanity tests, "Oka!" would be a crazy old man with a three-day beard and a sock full of kruggerrands under his mattress. Suggestive of Monty Python, evocative of Scots novelist William Boyd ("A Good Man in Africa") and generally disdainful of modern stereotypes and patriarchal white-man-on-the dark-continent stories, Lavinia Currier's film has the kind of freewheeling sensibility and contempt for conformity that could give it theatrical traction -- even if, as regards just about anything in the specialty arena, the current climate seems particularly hostile. It might even be as hostile as the environment Larry Whitman (Kris Marshall) finds himself in. Inspired by the real-life Louis Sarno (adapting his memoir with Currier and Suzanne Stroh), Larry is an ethnomusicologist who has been recording and preserving the music of the Bayaka pygmies of Yandombe, in the Central African Republic, and is returning home to New Jersey to raise funds. When his acerbic doctor (Peter Riegert) tells him he's dying, he opts not to wait for a liver transplant and instead presses a wealthy patron to finance another trip to Africa, so he can finish his work on the Bayaka. Larry finds a new world evolving in Yandombe. He's still the tallest, whitest guy around, but the Bayaka have been getting a hard time from the Bantu, whose mayor, Bassoun (Isaach de Bankole), has moved the pygmies into a smaller village and forbidden them from entering their sacred forest. Bassoun is hoping to sell the timber rights to a predatory Chinese businessman, Mr. Yi (Will Yun Lee). The encroachment of the modern on the ancient is a major theme, both narratively and visually, in "Oka!" (the Bayaka word for "listen"), and preservation is Currier's obvious message here. But Larry is less of a savior than a stand-in for the audience; he towers comically over the pygmies, who all make affectionate fun of him. One of the more mischievous locals is Sataka (Mapumba), the tribe's great hunter, who, with his wife, Ekadi (Essanje), has gone back into the jungle to escape the capricious rule of law. What's refreshing about "Oka!" is its aversion to any kind of cliches; the Bayaka people exhibit as much self-interest as anyone, they use Larry for all he's worth, and they have their decidedly craven side. Sataka's granddaughter, Makombe (Mbombi), on whom Larry develops a crush, plays him like a fish. Still, the Bayaka are the victims here: Bassoun wants to frame Sataka for an elephant killing and accuse the pygmies of poaching, which will enable him to move the Bayaka permanently out, and Mr. Yi in. While Larry is a hero, he's only one of several, just as the film is only partly a farcical dramedy about endangered people. It's also a nature film, the wildlife of the Central African Republic playing a prominent role in the visual storytelling, and Currier eschews the lions and tigers and bears for far more hideous and fascinating varieties of African wildlife. But virtually all the species seen in "Oka!" are given a fresh going over, including homo sapiens. Production values are generally good, d.p. Conrad W. Hall's work exceptional in capturing the character of Africa.Camera (color), Conrad W. Hall; editors, Kristina Boden, Nic Gaster; music, Chris Berry, the musicians of Yandombe; production designer, Alexandre Vivet; costume designer, Delphi Squires; sound (Dolby Digital), David Monacchi; line producer, Jean Aubert de Tregomain; casting, Lisa Hamil. Reviewed on DVD, NY, Oct. 11, 2011. (In 2010 Telluride Film Festival.) Running time: 106 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Idol's' Scotty McCreery tops chart

Proving that "American Idol" can still flex some sales muscle, the Fox competish's 2011 champ Scotty McCreery took the No. 1 slot on the U.S. album chart last week. The 18-year-old singer's Mercury Nashville/19/Interscope debut "Clear as Day" shifted 197,000 units its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ending Oct. 9. McCreery is the youngest male and the first country performer to arrive at No. 1 with his first album. After years of comparatively tepid sales by "Idol" winners, McCreery has become the first "Idol" to bow with a No. 1 collection since the second season's Ruben Studdard managed the feat in 2003. Of course, instant chart success has been no guarantee of career longevity for "Idol" stars. Studdard was dropped by his label, now-defunct J Records, after three albums; his last album, released independently, peaked at No. 36. Last week, RCA confirmed that it had dropped 2010 champ Lee DeWyze after just one album. Rest of the week's top five comprises familiar titles: Adele's "21" (No. 2, 112,000 sold, down just 5%), Tony Bennett's "Duets II" (No. 3, 71,000, off 22%), Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" (No. 4, 58,000, down 23%) and previous week's No. 1, J. Cole's "Cole World: The Sideline Story" (No. 5, 54,000, off 75%). Coming in behind Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV: (No. 6, 53,000, off 22%) and ahead of Blink-182's "Neighborhoods" (No. 10, 31,000, off 80%), three other new releases made subdued debuts. Feist's "Metals" (Interscope) arrived at No. 7 with 38,000 sold. Canadian singer and former Broken Social Scene member Leslie Feist's first album in four years has been garnering strong print reviews. Rodney Atkins' "Take a Back Road" (Curb) entered at No. 8 with a 35,000-unit debut week. Knoxville-bred singer's fourth studio album climbed into the top 10 on the back of its like-titled No. 1 country single. Jack's Mannequin sneaked into the top 10 at No. 9 with "People and Things" (Warner Bros.), moving 31,000. Set is one slot off the Orange County band's best performance, set by 2008's No. 8 title "The Glass Passenger." The coming week's chart will likely see renewed "Idol" action: 2011 runner-up Lauren Alaina's debut album reached stores this week. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Theater Owners Demand A Longer Wait For Tower Heist Premium VOD Test

Comcast-Uni Testing Tower Heist At $59.99 Cinemark Threatens Boycott Of Tower Heist Over Early VOD Experiment Theater owners seem resigned to the fact that Universal will run a premium video-on-demand test of its upcoming film Tower Heist – but are determined to push back the date, now scheduled for just three weeks after November, 4 when it opens in theaters. Negotiations continue as exhibition companies link arms: Three small regional theater chains have joined Cinemark in refusing to book Brett Ratner’s caper movie starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller if Universal proceeds with plans to offer it for $59.99 three weeks after the debut to roughly half a million cable homes in Atlanta and Portland, Ore.California-based Regency Theatres, Galaxy Theatres and Detroit-based Emagine Theatres as well as some small exhibitors representing some 50 screens around the country have also refused to book the movie, the LA Times reported. Exhibition companies feel that they already swallowed a bitter pill earlier this year when four studios announced a deal with satellite broadcaster DirecTV to make some movies available via VOD for $29.99 — but 60 days after their theatrical debut. Theater owners wanted to draw the line at 90 days. Anything less, they feared, would encourage many ticket buyers to wait and watch hit films in the comfort of their living rooms.

Anyway, glad this is settled. [THR] · More Universal! Robert Zemeckis and his Disney-deposed Imagemovers shingle have a new first-look deal with Universal, which has yielded the planned Charles Fort. But come on: Why would the Weinsteins deliberately tank this one when they’re so good at marketing to kids? [THR Esq.] · “I’ll gladly sponsor a tenth circle of hell for anyone texting during a movie. If you talk through it you deserve your tongue stapled to Eric Pickles. Packs of teenagers are a nightmare. Selfishness abounds. These things are a given.” I don’t know who Eric Pickles is, but Danny Leigh’s point about our love/hate relationships with cinemagoing is stated persuasively, evocatively and eloquently enough. Global Showbiz Briefs: UK, Qatar

James Murdoch’s Role At News Corp, BSkyB Questioned An influential shareholder group has urged News Corp investors to drop James Murdoch from its board. Murdoch has been eyed as his father Rupert Murdoch’s successor as chairman and CEO. But the group questions whether he is a suitable replacement considering his handling of the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Grey's Anatomy: Where Were We and What's Next?

Grey's Anatomy When Season 8 of Grey's Anatomy premieres (Thursday, 9/8c on ABC), Meredith and Derek are on the outs, Alex has been shunned by his fellow Seattle Gracers and Cristina is grappling with whether or not to abort her and Owen's child. But there's oh so much more that will be happening at the hospital so you might need a quick refresher on where we left off - and a juicy tease about what comes next in the doctors' final year of residency. Grey's Anatomy: Shonda Rhimes talks Mer-Der's struggle, Cristina's pregnancy Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) Where Were We? She tampered with the Alzheimer's clinical trial in hopes of saving Adele's life, which caused her to be suspended from the hospital. She also adopted baby Zola, but ended up having a huge fight with Derek. What's Next? As we've seen in the promos, Meredith will soon be out of a job, but don't expect that to be permanent. As for Mer and Der, "They'll struggle," executive producer Shonda Rhimes says. "It's not really about Meredith and Derek breaking up forever. I think people's marriages get screwed up. People have to work to fix them." Also look for trouble with baby Zola. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) Where Were We? After learning that Meredith tampered with the trial, he shunned her and moved out to the future McMansion. What's Next? With no signs of forgiving Meredith in sight, Derek will begin to bond with Owen. "Derek and Owen are dealing with the twisted sisters - Meredith and Cristina - who are very connected and very similar in a way," Kevin McKidd tells us. "So, they try to get away from the women a bit more. Owen starts helping Derek build his house, so they bond over that and the manliness of being outdoors and carrying wheelbarrows full of rocks. It's a way for them to decompress from all the pressure." Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) Where Were We? She found out she was pregnant with Owen's baby, and when she told him she planned to give it up, he kicked her out. What's Next? Cristina will struggle with whether or not to abort their child. "Cristina has always had a certain stance in how she feels about having kids and that stance doesn't change just because she's married and in love with Owen," Rhimes says. Plus, Teddy will finally, happily (see below), take her under her wing in cardio. Grey's Anatomy Exclusive: Find out who the new chief of Seattle Grace is Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) Where Were We? He was tasked with choosing the new Chief Resident - April won - while dealing with Cristina's decision to possibly abort their child. What's Next? Cristina and Owen may finally come to a détente. "I think he realizes that it really is her decision," McKidd teases. Still, Owen will be plenty busy once he's elected the new Chief of Seattle Grace. "Owen is as shocked as everybody else, so it changes the whole structure of the hospital," he says. "Owen, even though he's the Chief, [goes] to Richard a lot." Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) Where Were We? Worried that his hard work in pediatrics would be overlooked, Alex ousted Meredith for tampering with the trial in hopes of landing the Chief Resident spot. He was also dumped by Lucy (Rachael Taylor), who took his spot at Arizona's former hospital in Malawi. What's Next? Everyone hates him, really. "We're going to watch Alex both grow up and backslide a little bit," Rhimes spills. "He starts offin a real bad place, like really behind and nobody likes him. He's not doing so well. We're going to watch him pull it together and work to get his friendships back and charge forward." He will make a move in the premiere that will actually put Meredith in his debt. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) Where Were We? After many ups and downs with Mark, Lexie decided to start a stable relationship with Jackson. Though she did admit she was still in love with Mark in the finale. What's Next? Her relationship with Jackson is still going strong. Lest we forget, Lexie is a year younger than the other docs, so she won't be doing solo surgeries just yet. As for whether Lexie is being prepped to be the new Grey of Grey's Anatomy, Rhimes says, "I feel like Meredith Grey is the Grey of Grey's Anatomy and that's how it goes." Check out our fall preview for galleries, scoop, premiere calendars and more! Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) Where Were We? After nearly losing his and Callie's unborn child in a car accident, he gave Jackson and Lexie his blessing to continue seeing each other, but admitted he will always love her. What's Next? He'll cut back on his philandering ways and really focus on being a surgeon this year. "People have forgotten or lost sight of the fact that Mark Sloan is one of the most talented plastic surgeons in the country," Dane tells us. Still, things will get complicated when Mark mentors Jackson, as he once did Alex when he was dating Lexie. "It's the same set of circumstances, so we're going to find out if Sloan is a good teacher or not," he says. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) Where Were We? When tasked by Mark to look into how Lexie was coping, Jackson got in her good graces and secretly started a relationship with her. He was prepared to let Lexie go back to Mark. Luckily, she decided to stay with him. What's Next? Working under Mark will be tough, but the real thing Jackson has to worry about is making sure he treats Lexie right. "Mark sees that Lexie really likes Jackson and that Jackson is a good guy, so it's more a situation that 'if you break her heart, I'll break your face,'" Dane says. Plus, Avery's mother is coming to town! Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) Where Were We? After a tragic car accident nearly killed her and her unborn child, Callie healed and went on to marry Arizona. What's Next? After the tumultuous year she and Arizona endured, Rhimes wants them to be happy this year. "I think they've earned the right for us to enjoy them as a couple and to enjoy them as mothers and to watch them juggle what motherhood means to their relationship, their sex life and their jobs," she says. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) Where Were We? Feeling insecure about her place in the newly formed multi-parenting situation with Mark and Callie, Arizona proposed to Callie. Following the nearly fatal car crash, the pair married. What's Next? On top of being a happy mother and wife, she'll also push Alex to get his act together. "Arizona is like his only friend," Capshaw tells us. "She has a deep fondness for him, so she's definitely probably his only ally." Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning shows April Kepner (Sarah Drew) Where Were We? After being on the outs with Dr. Stark, who tried but failed to start a relationship with her, April received a glowing review in the race for Chief Resident from him that ultimately, along with her tried and true checklist system, won her the position. What's Next? "It's an uphill battle for her," Drew says of her taking on Chief Resident. "She's trying her best, but nobody is paying attention and nobody is taking her seriously. She's actually covering everybody's a--es in the first couple episodes because nobody listens to her or steps up when she's trying to delegate." Also, we'll see a geeky crush. What we won't see: her virgin character knocked up quickly even though Drew is pregnant in real life. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) Where Were We? Reinstalled as The Chief after Derek briefly took over at the beginning of the season, Richard was faced with Adele (Loretta Devine) possibly having Alzheimer's and being admitted into the clinical trial. He was forced to suspend Meredith after Alex ratted her out for tampering with the trial. What's Next? In order to save Meredith's career, Webber takes one for the team and steps down as The Chief. "At the end of the day, he's cool with this decision," Pickens says. "This allows him to spend more time, obviously, with Adele and her condition with the Alzheimer's. It'll get him back to what he loves to do, which is to be surgeon and mentor and teach young surgical students." Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) Where Were We? After feeling sorry for Henry (Scott Foley), a patient who was unable to pay for his intense and lengthy medical treatments, Teddy married him before reconnecting with Dr. Perkins (James Tupper), who asked her to move to Germany with him. Ultimately, Teddy chose Henry over Perkins. What's Next? She's happily in love with Henry this year. "She's finally, for the first time, out of the relationships that she thought were something, but turned out to not be anything and she's really glad to be out of the triangle with Owen and Christina," Raver tells us. "Henry and her are really in love. So, it's a good time for her." Teddy will focus her happiness into making Cristina a great doctor. "Teddy is trying to impart humility to her because Cristina sees that she's a genius, but she's lacking the really big, and basic parts of being a great doctor." Exclusive: Chandra Wilson to direct another episode of Grey's Anatomy Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) Where Were We? Bailey took the shooting at Seattle Grace the hardest, but bounced back this season after she began dating Nurse Eli (Daniel Sunjata). What's Next? She's still happily dating Eli, but the return of a certain former lover may shake things up a bit. Plus, she's very unhappy about The Chief stepping down, but even angrier that Owen is Webber's replacement. "Her anger with the Chief for resigning is all dumped on Owen, because she has to respect [Webber's] decision that he feels it's time to retire and to hand over that power to somebody else," McKidd says. All caught up? Now tell us: What are you looking forward to in the new season?

Shine Purchase Nets Elisabeth Murdoch $214M

News Corp investors thought Rupert Murdoch's $675 million purchase of daughter Elisabeth's indie production company Shine Group in April was a good enough sweetheart deal they have filed legal cases to challenge it. However it wasn't revealed just how much Elisabeth made -- $214 million -- until News Corp made its annual SEC filing Monday. The majority of the purchase visited Shine's equity partners, the filing stated. Elisabeth Murdoch was most investor in Shine, which she's grown by buying local production companies she bought Work producer Reveille in 2008. Following the News Corp-Shine deal was introduced, Rupert Murdoch stated his daughter would join News Corp's board of company directors alongside he and sons James and Lachlan. But individuals plans were scrapped for the moment earlier this year included in the fallout in the growing News around the globe scandal within the United kingdom and questions regarding the conglomerate's corporate governance.

Dish Network 2Q Earnings Below Expectations As Subscriptions Fall

The big questions for Dish Network have more to do with its mysterious plans for Blockbuster and the massive amount of spectrum it has been acquiring than how well it did in 2Q. But until Chairman Charlie Ergen unveils his strategy, all the Street has to go on is how well the No. 2 satellite company is performing. And the 2Q numbers are mixed, at best. The company reported net earnings of $334.8M, up 30.3% vs the period last year, on revenues of $3.59B, up 13.3%. The revenue figure includes nearly $254M from Blockbuster. Yet Dish earnings, at 75 cents a share, missed analysts' consensus estimate of 79 cents -- although revenues beat the $3.4B target. Meanwhile Dish lost 135,000 subscribers, ending with 14.06M. "As we look forward to the second half of the year, we will focus on commercializing our technology, re-energizing our distribution channels and strengthening our brand image," says Dish Network CEO Joe Clayton. The company says it will freeze consumer prices through Jan. 2013.

Lionsgate made the disclosure inside a 10K/A filing Friday using the Investments and Exchange Commission being an amendment to its May 31 filing. Feltheimer, the co-chairman and Boss, received $4.76 milliion available, a $1.9 million bonus along with a $1.two million base salary. Feltheimer, whose contract incurs 2014, gained $3.sixty five million in fiscal 2010 and $7.78 million in fiscal 2009. The filing also revealed that Vice Chairman Michael Burns received $2.69 million this past year, lower from $7.7 million in fiscal 2010 when his stock award was $5.3 million. General Counsel Wayne Levin gained with $3.16 million, including $a million available-based compensation. Lionsgate reported in May a loss of revenue of $53.six million for that fiscal year, in comparison having a lack of $19.5 million within the prior year, with revenues growing 6% to $1.58 billion while income was up 10% to $68.3 million. It stated the 2011 loss was due mainly to elevated interest expenses, a $14.5 million non-cash loss on extinguishment of debt on its $100 million debt-for-equity swap -- which reduced Icahn's stake from 38% to 33% -- and elevated equity interest loss due mainly to Lionsgate's curiosity about pay cabler Epix.
